Wrap-up
In conclusion, and to emphasize a point we have been making throughout this course, the key to developing a successful IP strategy is to understand the nature of each form of IP. This means recognizing both the scope and the limits of each, their advantages and disadvantages, the costs associated with securing their protection, and whether and how they intersect or complement each other.
In addition, you will need to take into account any significant differences in the IP laws and practices in the different countries in which you carry on or intend to carry on business. With this knowledge, you are in a good position to be able to tailor your entire IP portfolio to optimal effect.
WHAT’S NEXT
We will discuss the strategic “layering“ of IP in the next module.
